B.E.A.S.T II [Wrap Up + Results]

August 21, 2011 in News, Tournament Info

B.E.A.S.T. II concludes the European Melee qualifier in the “Road to Apex” series. Run by Lolex, this tournament was the sequel to B.E.A.S.T (a national tournament hosted in Gothenburg, Sweden). At the first BEAST, Armada ran a train straight through the singles bracket, not dropping even one game throughout the duration of the entire tournament.  The sequel to the stand out tournament was pretty large, gathering over 110 entrants for singles! In the months leading up to the tournament, the tournament garnered not only a name for itself, but a ton of hype in the Smash community.  While the US showered interest in the tournament initially, it was left to the Europeans to fend for themselves against Armada, and his seemingly undefeatable Peach. On the eve of the tournament, Lolex arranged housing for players and held a pre-BEAST a small fest at a venue that is usually used for smaller tournaments in Sweden. The European community could enjoy smash, pool/snooker, and different tabletop/card games the day before the actual tournament started. To many players, this was the first day of BEAST 2.  Tensions were eased as the players relaxed, for tomorrow, everyone would have their eyes on first place, and the chance to be seeded as one of the top players at the international tournament coming up in January. On the 11th, the venue opened, and the first day was devoted to mostly casual play, and and the Crew Battle that would happen in the evening.  Unfortunately, due to some

“KTAR 6: The Finale” [Wrap Up + Results]

August 17, 2011 in News, Qualifiers

Brawl is three and one half years old.  Brawl gets more heat than any game has, probably, in the history of competitive gaming. (Pokemon?)  But when you get 130 people for a tournament without a guaranteed pot, and with only two months notice, then you’re at least making one hell of an argument. The Road to Apex so far has been a long, and arduous task, but with only a few months to go, the first major Brawl qualifier in America got underway!  KTAR 6: The Finale concluded this weekend to an unsurprising top three, but a very surprising top eight!  Atomsk, who decided that he was going to stop playing competitively, showed up with a great performance, earning himself a spot in the final eight with his amazing Wario, and his always on-point Metaknight.  Against Mew2King in loser’s bracket, Atomsk even pulled out his Wolf to try and use the lack of matchup knowledge to his favor.  Mew2king caught the matchup half way through game 1, and was able to keep himself afloat throughout the set. Junebug, a well known player from Maryland, managed a 2-1 victory over the constantly mentioned Mew2King, guaranteeing himself a spot in the top 5 in the process.  A tight game three on Frigate Orpheon was thought to give M2K an edge, but Junebug’s knowledge of the stage and matchup proved to be a bit too strong, ending the match by reading Mew2king’s glide and smashing a Aura Sphere into (due to his reaction,
